Two leading Australian law firms - Mallesons Stephen Jaques and Clayton Utz - have banned a website that publishes law firm gossip.
‘Firm Spy’ seeks to publish news of industry redundancies, pay freezes, and ‘dodgy corporate behaviour like forcing staff to take annual leave during the Christmas period and ditching the office biscuits’. According to its administrators, the site’s appeal – with around 10,000 hits per day – lies in the fact that it exposes information that firms wish to keep secret.
Mallesons made the move to block access to the site just days before the site published allegations that the firm was artificially adjusting performance ratings to justify lower pay rises. At Clayton Utz, the site was blocked at around the it published an article alleging the firm had run a secret redundancy program that led to more than 100 lawyers leaving, while increasing payouts to partners.
Both firms have said that they blocked the site because of stories about the private lives of staff.
